Cockroach Stand-off

Now I am settling into a routine it seems Sunday is my washing and general do nothing day. Yes, washing does involve a bucket, soap powder (with aching cracked hands from sticking them in detergent) and a whole lot of hand scrubbing and clothes squeezing. However, those who are frustrated from living in the UK and possibly waiting for days for your clothes to dry or having to plan your day so you are close enough to home to run out and grab your washing, you may be slightly jealous that everything dries within a few hours due to the heat (small victories). As a result, I am going to use Sunday as my blog day and try and update it once a week. This week we have all been in the office every day planning our remaining 8 weeks of project work to ensure we get everything done. Today, I'm going to show you a bit more of the Sagnarigu Pagsung complex. Pagsung itself means good woman and it now includes over 1500 members that have been building over the last 10 years. Pagsung women come

On Tuesday, it will be 3 weeks since I first left the UK. Since my last update, I have completed the team leader training which required much more finance administration and risk assessing than I predicted. After this, I moved into my host home which is lovely, I get my own room as I am a team leader so it is nice to not be squished and living out of a suitcase until June. However, I do have to live with my co-team leader so will be spending all day with him and all evening lol! The UK and Ghanaian volunteers arrived on Tuesday 16/01 to start their 3 days of training and then all moved into their host homes on Friday. We visited the office so we have an idea of where we are working and the real work will start on Monday. So far I love loving the experience of being in a new place. The people that I have met here are more open-minded and passionate about improving their county than I would have believed. However, due to issues I will go into as my time continues, they are not able to

Soooo, I left England on 02/01 and flew from Heathrow to Casablanca. My flight to Accra was "rescheduled" by two hours which is the same as a delay but they don't acknowledge it was delayed, they just say they changed the time. As a result, I arrived in Accra (capital of Ghana) at 5am with another UK TL leader, Tom, and a programme associate for International Service called Corin who has been working here for 6 months. She took us to a hostel where we slept for 2 hours and then returned to the airport for our flight to Tamale at 11.30am. However, after waiting 5 hours we were told that the Harmattan (a heavy dusty wind that blows down from the Sahara in their dry season) was too thick and our flight was cancelled. We were all very tired by this point so decided to go back to the hostel and try and get on the rescheduled flight at 3.40pm on 04/01 instead of heading straight for the bus station to get the 12 hour couch journey. A 12 hour sleep and a flight later we lande
